The West African Examinations Council has requested candidates whose results in the just-ended West African Senior School Certificate Examination were withheld to begin re-checking their results from Monday. The decision by the examination body is expected to allay fears over the withheld results and bring some clarity for affected students.
In a statement made available on Friday, the council said the gesture was in tandem with the openness and fair-play policy of the council in the conduct of examinations. According to WAEC, the results were withheld, as various suspected cases of examination malpractice or irregularities were seen during the assessment period.
This service will be available to candidates through the website of the Council. To get this process underway, students will need to upload their examination details on the website, including their index number, year of examination, and any other viable means of payment. WAEC has called upon candidates to ensure that their information is accurate to avoid complications in the rechecking process.
This rechecking initiative has come at an opportune time for the students, as many of them are eager to go ahead with their academic plans at university, placements, and much more. Such candidates showed frustration and anxiety for the withheld result, which they say may affect future opportunities.
The WAEC, while reacting to these concerns, assured candidates that every case would be reviewed and that necessary actions, depending on the findings, would be taken against those found to have undermined the integrity of the council's examination. It said it was determined to create a transparent environment for holding examinations while helping the students in advancing their academic pursuits.
With the re-checking process starting on Monday, WAEC has called on all candidates to keep hope alive and be patient. In a notification, the council assured it was committed to informing them of developments in due time, with the promise that results of deserving candidates would be released as soon as possible.
This was a well-received move in trying to restore confidence in the examination system for students' advancement. At the start of the new week, many are looking forward to the resolution of their academic uncertainties and the realization of their goals.
