There was more late heartache for Scotland on Saturday, who had an injury-time equaliser disallowed against Croatia (L 2-1), condemning them to a third straight UEFA Nations League (UNL) defeat.
After they lost their opening two games against Poland (3-2) and Portugal (2-1) by conceding after the 85th minute, they're staring at likely relegation back to League B for the next cycle.
It's now over 18 months since the Scots beat European champions-to-be Spain 2-0 in Glasgow, but since then they've only beaten Georgia at home (D2, L3), so face a tall order here.
Scotland vs Portugal: Match Preview
Winning none of the last three H2Hs on home soil (D2, L1) is hardly encouraging either as Steve Clarke's men try to pick themselves up again and get something out of their first-ever campaign in League A.
Their opponents Portugal are seasoned campaigners at this level having won the inaugural UNL title in 2018/19 and are now closing in on the knockout stages after beating Poland 3-1 to continue their perfect start to this cycle (W3). As they conceded in all three fixtures, there's still work to do even though coach Roberto Martínez said he was satisfied with the way they controlled the Poland game.
He'll expect more of the same against a side ranked 44 places below them according to FIFA, especially as Portugal have only ever lost one UNL away game (W5, D3). They scored at least twice in all of those wins, so a repeat of their last visit to Glasgow, when they won 3-1 in October 2018, could well be on the cards.
Match Stat
Tournament football aside, only one side scored in seven of Portugal's last eight away internationals (W6, L2).
Our Tip
Portugal to either win or draw
Switzerland vs Denmark: Match Preview
The picture in UEFA Nations League (UNL) Group A4 looks fairly bleak for Switzerland, who remain pointless after three games. Their latest disappointment came against nearest rivals Serbia on Saturday night (L 2-0), leaving them four points adrift at the foot of the group, and they could be confirmed as the side to finish bottom here if they lose against Denmark and Serbia pick up a shock win against Spain.
Since the UNL's inception, Switzerland have never forayed outside of League A, so it would be a huge disappointment for them if they do end up getting relegated. A torrid recent H2H record (W1, D7, L3) would suggest they'll take another step towards League B here, but they will perhaps take some heart from that high draw tally, a result which should they replicate here, would ensure they at least remain alive in Group A4 for the November internationals.
Denmark will still have half an eye on the trap door themselves, as the side to finish third will enter the relegation play-offs. Interim boss Lars Knudsen will be keen to ensure that doesn't happen, and although they lost narrowly against European champions Spain (1-0) on Saturday, their two comfortable wins prior means that a place in the UNL quarter finals is still in their hands.
This serves as a second away game in succession for the Danes, but they should be confident of bouncing back as never before have they lost back-to-back UNL games. If they're to ensure that remains the case here then it'll likely be courtesy of a victory, as none of their last 13 UNL outings have ended level (W9, L4), while the last seven victories in that run came by either a 2-0 or 2-1 scoreline.
The designated home team has scored exactly twice in five of Denmark's last six UNL games and in three of Switzerland's last four.
Our Tip
Draw or no bet
Spain vs Serbia: Match Preview
Spain began this international break with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Denmark to seize control of their UEFA Nations League (UNL) group and increase their prospects of reaching the quarter-finals of the competition. Another victory here would put Serbia out of reach and confirm La Roja's play-off place with two matches to spare. That's probably the expectation from manager Luis de la Fuente, who won the last UNL in just his fourth game in charge.
Spain have gone from strength to strength, having only lost twice in 24 internationals under their current boss (W20, D2, L2), a run which includes two major honours. Despite their recent footballing dominance however, Spain's overall UNL home record hasn't been wholly impressive (W6, D1, L2), although the fact that their six wins as hosts in this competition have come by a combined 20-0 scoreline suggests that they potentially have a big result up their sleeve.
Trying to dent that record, Serbia look to be vying with Denmark for a place in the UNL play-offs after keeping Switzerland pointless with a comfortable 2-0 win on Saturday. Relief may have been the prevailing emotion for head coach Dragan Stojković in the wake of that triumph, as he was enduring his longest wait for a victory since his 2021 appointment (D3, L2), with Serbia now seeking consecutive wins for the first time in more than a year.
Such an outcome would be a fairytale for a nation who began their UNL life in the third tier back in 2018, although the fact that they've never scored against Spain suggests that this match will be far from easy (D1, L1). This is without doubt Serbia's toughest-ever UNL trip, but their away record in this competition is not to be sniffed at (W4, D4, L2), so they'll hope to at least find the net, just as they did in eight of those ten games.
