This is perhaps the most significant endorsement yet that has stirred political debate all over Ghana, as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo finally made a public declaration of his support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his preferred successor for both the New Patriotic Party and, by extension, the country. It was at a gathering of party members and supporters in Accra that the President hailed the contribution of Bawumia to the administration and his vision for Ghana's future.

During the address, Akufo-Addo quickly presaged the phenomenal qualifications and experience that Bawumia has accumulated, reiterating how he played a key role in the implementation of all the major economic policies and programmes that have been made for the country over the past seven years. "Dr. Bawumia has been an indispensable partner in our government; his understanding of the economy and technology makes him the best candidate to continue the progress we have made," Akufo-Addo said.

The Vice President, Bawumia, has been at the forefront of Ghanaian politics since he took office in 2017 and has received recognition for his achievements in regard to economics and digital transformation. He has been instrumental in introducing the system of Mobile Money Interoperability and digitization of public services, which has greatly improved access and efficiency.

The expected endorsement by the President is likely to seal Bawumia's position as he prepares to contest the NPP primaries scheduled for early next year. Many insiders of the party are of the view that with Akufo-Addo's backing, Bawumia will be in the best position to rally support from the grassroots of the party.

For his endorsement by the President, Bawumia thanked him and gave an assurance of his determination to continue the legacy of the current administration. He promised that if elected, his emphasis would be on economic growth, job creation, and national unity.

This, therefore, brings a new dimension into the 2024 race, as the entire political landscape is heating up, and this could probably signal a consolidation of support for Bawumia within the NPP. The next months shall, therefore, prove quite critical in the light of frantic campaigning by candidates and jostling to secure positions for party nomination.
