Accra, Ghana - Former President John Mahama currently leads in one of the latest polls conducted ahead of the 2024 general elections, with feelings of a change in voting sentiment as the campaigns gain momentum. According to the survey conducted by the well-reputed firm XYZ Polls, Mahama of the NDC leads the race, with 48% of those interviewed indicating support for his candidature.
The poll, which interviewed over 2,500 registered voters across diverse regions of Ghana, marks a wide lead for Mahama over his main opponent, incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the governing New Patriotic Party, who garnered 36 percent support. The remaining 16 percent of the respondents were undecided or declined to declare their choice.
Analysts said the comeback of Mahama reflects increasing discontent among the electorate over the way in which the current government has addressed major concerns, especially those dealing with the economy and inflation. Most said they had been uneasy about increased living costs and joblessness amid the global economic downturn. The campaign of Mahama had pegged its platform on pledges for economic recovery and increased quality of life for the people, since such an appeal has become popular to those seeking change.
Former President Mahama, speaking at a rally over the weekend, underscored unity and progress as being avenues to a better future that Ghanaians can be optimistic about: "We have a vision for a better Ghana, and together we can turn the tide." These were his remarks during a rousing welcome by supporters in Accra.
But political analysts caution that, while the results are encouraging for Mahama, the election is still several months away and voter sentiment can change in a flash. The NPP has issued no formal response to the poll but is expected in the coming weeks to ramp up its campaign activities to assuage concerns of the voters.
With the looming 2024 elections, both candidates are armed for battle on issues such as economic management, healthcare, and infrastructure that form the core of campaign rhetoric. The dynamics remain fluid, and all eyes shall be on how the candidates adjust their strategy in order to sway the undecided electorate.
