Former Ghanaian international footballer Agyemang-Badu has surprisingly apologized publicly for his support of Otto Addo as the head coach of the Ghana national team. Badu, whose comments are surprising to many, comes on the heels of the recent poor performances by the Black Stars in recent international fixtures, with increasing scrutiny over the management of Addo.
Badu, who played an important role in Ghana's qualification to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, said during a popular sports radio show that he was starting to regret supporting Addo's coaching methods. "I believed Otto had the right approach and vision for the team, but looking after the recent results and the lack of cohesion of the team on the pitch, I feel I made a mistake in my support," Badu said.
Recent matches of the Black Stars have been eventful, with an upsetting loss in qualifiers of the Africa Cup of Nations. The team has been criticized for poor tactics and failure to put to good use its talented roster. Badu's about-face reflects a growing discontent not only among fans but also among former players over the course that the team is taking.
Badu said his grievances emanate from a place of love for the national team: "Ghana has always been known for its fighting spirit and talent; I just want what is best for our team. I hope by voicing my opinion, we can inspire a conversation about how to improve and move forward," he added.
Otto Addo was thrust into the head coaching position during a sensitive time in Ghana football, and when he started well, everyone became hopeful of the team's success. However, in the wake of recent dismal performances, questions about his efficiency in handling the team have resurfaced.
While the Ghana Football Association has not yet responded to Badu's comments, growing discontent among the fans could add more pressure on the coaching staff. Grumblings will continue to grow even louder with the upcoming matches as Black Stars supporters eagerly await the return of the glory days by calling for a change in the management team.
