Amenfi Central MP Breaks Silence on Petition to Declare His Seat Vacant Due to Independent Candidacy

The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central has addressed a petition seeking to declare his seat vacant following allegations of his intent to run as an independent candidate in upcoming elections. The petition, brought forward by some constituents, argues that the MP's decision to contest outside his party's ticket is a betrayal of the party and the voters who elected him, thus violating his mandate.

In his response, the MP expressed surprise at the petition, stating that he remains committed to serving the people of Amenfi Central and representing their interests in Parliament. He dismissed claims that he had formally resigned from his political party or announced his candidacy as an independent. He clarified that while there were discussions and suggestions from some community members about running independently, he has not made any official declarations in that regard.

The MP further noted that his focus remains on the development of the Amenfi Central constituency. He cited several projects under his leadership, including improvements in infrastructure, education, and health services, as evidence of his dedication to the welfare of his constituents. According to him, these efforts are part of his broader vision for transforming the constituency, regardless of political affiliations or disputes.

On the legal side, the petitioners argue that the MP's actions breach the constitution, which mandates that MPs vacate their seat if they leave the party through which they were elected. They believe his alleged intentions to run as an independent are grounds for the Speaker of Parliament to declare the seat vacant, triggering a by-election.

However, the MP’s legal team maintains that unless he officially resigns from his party or files as an independent candidate, he is still legally recognized as a member of his political party in Parliament. They argue that political debates and consultations do not constitute a breach of party loyalty or warrant the declaration of his seat as vacant.

The MP called for calm among his supporters and the constituency at large, urging them to avoid division. He reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities in Parliament and ensuring the continued development of Amenfi Central, regardless of the political turbulence.

As this situation unfolds, both the MP and his opponents await further guidance from the parliamentary authorities on the matter, which could set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
