East Legon Accident: Bishop Salifu Amoako and Wife Charged
An Accra Circuit Court has charged Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako, his wife, and an employee with permitting an unlicensed person to drive, following a tragic accident in East Legon that resulted in the deaths of two girls.
The incident involved their 16-year-old son, who allegedly drove a Jaguar F-Pace SUV owned by Mrs. Amoako after being given the keys by Linda Bonsu Bempah, despite knowing he did not have a driver's license. The three accused pleaded not guilty in court.
On Wednesday, the court granted them bail of GHC50,000 each, with two sureties required. The prosecution detailed that during a celebration for the elder brother of the minor, Ms. Bonsu Bempah handed over the vehicle keys.
The minor reportedly drove with a friend towards Bawaleshie on Dzanie Ashie Street. At the Mensah Wood Avenue junction, he collided with an Acura SUV, causing both vehicles to crash into a nearby fence, igniting a fire that trapped the occupants of the Acura. Tragically, 12-year-olds Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh Boateng lost their lives in the accident.
The juvenile driver and two other survivors are currently hospitalized at the University of Ghana Medical Center. Bishop Amoako and his wife reportedly admitted to allowing their son to drive to the gym and other nearby locations during the investigation.
In a related incident, supporters of Bishop Amoako confronted journalists outside the courtroom, attempting to prevent video coverage and assaulting a police officer who intervened.
