Former President John Dramani Mahama is expected to begin the fourth phase of the tour of the country, with a focus on the Greater Accra Region today. The tour becomes necessary as Ghana inches closer to the general elections in 2024, with Mr. Mahama believed to be doing everything possible to retain goodwill among constituents ahead of the polls and also shore up more support for the NDC.
The tour commences early in the morning with a series of engagements: town hall meetings, interacting with party members and local leaders. Mahama is expected to address the major concerns within the region, including infrastructure development, unemployment, and an increase in the cost of living. He has, at various stops on previous phases of his tour, stressed the need for unity in the party and called for mobilization from the grassroots as the NDC readies itself for the impending electoral battle.
Greater Accra has always been one of the most important parts of Ghanaian politics, with a very diverse electorate. He will tour the various constituencies within the region, including but not limited to Accra Central, Ablekuma South, and La Dade Kotopon. Indeed, in those areas, he will interact with party loyalists, share in the vision for the future of the NDC, and seek input as to any concerns.
This marks a return to political life imbued with a new sense of mission. His quest to regain the presidency is coupled with the vocalization of every economic mishap he feels the government had wrought while offering alternatives in policies the betterment of livelihoods of Ghanaians depend on.
The former president would also be expected to raise his achievements from the past administration and outline plans he intends to do for the recovery of the economy, improvement in infrastructure, and social welfare if he gets the chance again to govern.
With the expectation building up, party officials and supporters are preparing for a series of events to fire up public interest and support in Mahama's candidature. The Greater Accra tour, therefore, can be expected to be the most significant step in Mahama's campaign toward helping consolidate the stronghold of the NDC in one of the country's most populous regions.
The tour is not looked at as a mere political drive but also a great avenue for Mahama to reassure the people of his commitment to the development of the Greater Accra Region and its people.
