The political landscape seems to have taken a new dramatic turn as former President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed the announcement by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, confirming four parliamentary seats as vacant. This follows the disqualification of some MPs who were unable to meet various criteria to retain their seats in the House.

Speaking to the press shortly after the declaration, Mahama characterized the Speaker's decision as a "sign of victory" for democracy in Ghana. He explained that the removal of the MPs is an indication that the need for accountability and adherence to the principles of the electoral process should not be compromised. "This decision underpins the need to uphold democratic culture, and making sure that those elected to represent the people are qualified to do so," he said.

The Speaker's pronouncement has elicited varied responses from across the political divide. Among the vacant seats are those constituencies previously represented by ruling NPP members. This could affect the power dynamics in Parliament and present an opportunity for opposition parties, should by-elections be organized. Mahama emphasized how important the upcoming elections were as he urged the electorate to take part in the democratic process.

Political analysts say this could be the impetus that the NDC needs to return to being a force in Parliament, as the Mahama-led party has been building its structures in readiness for the 2024 general elections. "The NDC is willing and ready to take advantage of all those vacant seats that will be available anytime soon. We will work towards ensuring that the voices of our people are represented in Parliament," he assured.

With the nation awaiting further developments, the Electoral Commission is expected to announce dates for by-elections in the vacant constituencies. The political repercussions of this Speaker's declaration have yet to be seen, but from the utterances of Mahama, it seems the NDC is ready to mobilize its base and make hay from this unexpected turn of events. With much at stake, the coming few months are going to be very crucial for each of these three parties in preparing the ground for the coming electoral contests.
