Manchester United look set to be left frustrated in their pursuit of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

The Red Devils were previously linked with a move for the left-back. The Canadian is set to be available on a free transfer next summer with less than a season remaining on his contract.

United have even scouted him following their persistent problems at left-back due to the injury issues endured by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Club chiefs were already pessimistic about their chances of signing Davies, but it now appears that their task could be even more difficult.

According to reports in Spain, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are battling to sign him. The former are huge admirers and even attempted to sign him in the most recent window but refused to pay the €40million (£34m) asking price demanded by Davies’ current employers Bayern Munich.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the defender is still on Barcelona’s shortlist. They could potentially attempt to take advantage of their fierce rivals’ failure to agree terms with Davies.

Barcelona are not giving in on their pursuit of the left-back and are hopeful that former Bayern boss Hansi Flick could prove to be a decisive asset. Bayern chief Uli Hoeneß has already given his verdict on Davies’ future and claimed he would not get offered a new deal.

"We told him very clearly that we would let the contract expire if he did not renew it," he said. "He will not get any more money."

Despite that, Davies himself was slightly more cagey when probed about his future. The defender said: “My full focus is on this team. I’m playing here for Bayern Munich now and that’s what I’m concentrating on. I want to win every game.

“That’s why I’m not thinking about it at the moment. Regardless of whether I stay or leave the club, I will always carry this club in my heart.”

Asked if a new contract remains a possibility, he replied: “That’s a good question, you’ll have to talk to my agent about that. My focus right now is on winning every game. I’m not thinking about the other topic at the moment.”

Davies, 23, signed for Bayern in 2018 from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. He has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the side, winning five Bundesliga titles, the Champions League and a whole host of other trophies.
