Accra, Ghana – His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the National Service Authority, marking an important milestone in the country's quest and commitment to promoting youth involvement in national development. The commissioning was at the Accra International Conference Centre, attended by governmental heads, stakeholders in education, and various representative civil society organizations.
President Akufo-Addo expressed profound belief in national service in building civic responsibility among the country's youth, as he spoke at the ceremony. "The National Service Authority will provide a structured framework to ensure that our young people contribute meaningfully to the development of our nation while gaining valuable skills and experience," he said. He said that the initiative falls in line with what the government wants: tapping into the potential of the youths for national growth.
It intended to ensure that the streamlined national service program, that over the years has been part of Ghana's educational system, is henceforth managed by an authority that would deploy graduates into education, health, agriculture, and technology, amongst others by seeing to it that participants are placed in institutions that would fit their areas of study.
The new Executive Director for NSA, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, was optimistic about what the authority could achieve. "We will create opportunities that not only enhance the employability of our youth but also encourage them to contribute to sustainable development in their communities," he said.
The NSA also works in the areas of improving national service personnel welfare through increased allowances, training programmes, and exposures to resource facilities that would add value to their service. According to the government, an investment in the youth through NSA is said to stimulate job creation and also create innovation.
Indeed, many stakeholders have welcomed the introduction of the National Service Authority, something they describe as timely, with most graduates facing challenges in the job market. With this policy, the administration of President Akufo-Addo is set to make the country's youth active agents in nation-building.
