Security Guard Opens Fire on Locals at Kunsu ‘Galamsey’ Site, One Dead!

One Dead, Seven Injured After Security Guard Opens Fire on Locals.

A tragic shooting incident has left one person dead and seven others injured in Kunsu, a community near Nyame Adom in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region. The incident occurred on Friday morning when a security guard, employed to protect an illegal mining site operated by Chinese nationals, opened fire on locals who had entered the area in search of gold.

According to reports, the locals visited the site to gather gold nuggets after the miners had wrapped up their daily operations. However, their presence led to a confrontation with the security guard stationed at the site, who sought to prevent them from accessing the area. In an attempt to drive them away, the guard fired in their direction, resulting in injuries to eight individuals.

Among the injured was a 17-year-old boy who later succumbed to his wounds at the Mankranso Government Hospital. Two other victims, whose conditions required more advanced medical care, were referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi. The remaining injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the Mankranso Government Hospital.

In the aftermath of the shooting, angered residents retaliated by storming the illegal mining site, where they set an excavator belonging to the operators ablaze. The situation has sparked tension within the community, with residents demanding justice for the victims.

Local authorities, including the Assembly Member for the Nyame Adom Electoral Area, Felix Nkansah, confirmed the incident and provided further details. “I received a call about the shooting and visited the hospital to check on the victims,” Nkansah said. “The 17 year-old boy, unfortunately, died while receiving treatment. I reported the matter to the police, who later visited the site and conveyed the deceased’s body to the morgue.”

Nkansah also revealed that the security guard responsible for the shooting fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, making it difficult for the police to make any immediate arrests. “So far, no one has been arrested because the shooter bolted when the police got to the scene. The site is known to be operated by Chinese nationals who employ some locals as security personnel,” he added.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and apprehend the suspect. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue as the authorities continue their inquiries.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing tensions between illegal mining operators and local communities in Ghana, particularly in areas where residents rely on such sites to supplement their livelihoods.
