Renowned highlife artiste, Ofori Amponsah has shared his journey to becoming a star in Ghana’s music scene. In an interview on the Day Show with Berla Mundi, Ofori Amponsah revealed that he often walked around in search of a producer to pitch his songs to.
He recounted that one day in Lapaz after he had just closed from school, he decided to go on his usual search for a producer and met a Compact Disc (CD) seller. The CD seller told him about an opportunity; the legendary Daddy Lumba was looking for talents to groom. “I was in school and after school, I would just pick my CDs and go around and I went to a CD shop around Lapaz. “That was the last day, I just wanted to give up because I was looking for about 4 years trying to get somebody to listen to my songs.
“When I got to that place I asked the guy who you produce, he said no and asked if I have a song and I said yes. “So, he listened to the songs and started nodding his head and saying these songs are great. I think Daddy Lumba is searching for young guys to groom. So that guy was my breakthrough,” he narrated on Sunday, October 20. He subsequently met Daddy Lumba two days after he had been told of the opportunity. The legendary highlife listened to his songs and applauded him with GHC5000 cash in a brown envelope back in 1993.
“The first day I couldn’t meet him so, I went the next day and met him and he said are you Ofori Amponsah and I said yes. And he said you this small boy sang this song. So, he went in and came back with an envelope with GHC5000 those days and he said ‘you are a star’,” the ‘Otoolege’ hitmaker narrated. According to him, the reason was that the legendary Daddy Lumba at a point “gave up on production” and that stalled his work with him.
“But it took another four to five years before the songs came out. There was a problem, he also gave up on production and I was in school that time and was sacked from school for just going to sing so I was like on the street for four years so that was the reason. “But by divine intervention, the songs came out,” Ofori Amponsah noted. His first-ever song with Daddy Lumba was ‘Anti Atta’. He later released his first album, ‘Asew’.
