The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Alhassan Bashir Alhassan Fuseini, has firmly stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus has rightfully assumed its position as the Majority in Ghana’s Parliament. Ahead of the Speaker’s address on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, A.B.A. Fuseini reaffirmed the NDC's stance, emphasizing that no directive, aside from that of the Speaker, can dictate how Parliament should function.
Fuseini underscored the authority of the Speaker as the final arbiter within the legislative body, noting that any decision made by the Speaker must be followed. This came in response to recent developments where four parliamentary seats were declared vacant, leading to the declaration that the NDC caucus now holds the Majority position.
“Mr. Speaker is in charge of this House, so nobody else from anywhere, not even the President of the Republic, can come and direct the Speaker on how he should run the House. So the Speaker’s authority in this House is final, and whatever ruling the Speaker gives is what we comply with. We are in the Majority, and we are sitting appropriately where we should sit, so as far as I’m concerned, I don’t see where there’s a problem,” Fuseini explained in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb on October 22, 2024.
NDC Firm on Majority Position
The Sagnarigu MP expressed confidence in the decision-making process of the Speaker and assured that the NDC caucus is aligned with the legal directives concerning parliamentary structure. This affirmation follows a period of uncertainty and debate over the rightful Majority in Parliament after the recent vacancies. However, according to Fuseini, the Speaker's ruling has provided clarity.
No Anticipated Conflict with NPP
Amid concerns about potential tensions between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC caucuses over the Majority position, Fuseini dismissed such speculations. He emphasized that both parties have mutual respect and will continue to work within the framework of the standing orders governing Parliament.
“I don’t foresee any trouble because we have taken our rightful place. If they come and we’ve taken our rightful place, where will the conflict come from? So I am very confident that we are colleagues, and we will respect one another. We should live in accordance with the rules, practices, and standing orders of the House, so I don’t see why there should be any problem,” Fuseini stated.
With the Speaker’s anticipated address, it is expected that the parliamentary process will continue smoothly, with both sides abiding by the Speaker’s rulings. The NDC’s position as the Majority is now affirmed, solidifying the legislative dynamics in the House as the nation’s political landscape continues to evolve.
