Oscar Shines as Shanghai Port Secure First Asian Champions League Victory
Former Brazil playmaker Oscar played a pivotal role in helping Shanghai Port secure their first win in the 2023 Asian Champions League, defeating Australia's Central Coast Mariners 3-2 on Tuesday. The victory marked a crucial turning point for Shanghai, who had only managed one point from their previous two group-stage matches. With this win, they reignited their campaign and moved forward in their quest to advance from the group.
Oscar, who joined Shanghai from Chelsea in 2017, was instrumental in all three of his team’s goals. In the second minute, his corner kick was flicked on by Wu Lei and met by Li Ang, who headed the ball into the net to give Shanghai an early lead. Oscar's impact continued as he played a role in the team’s second goal just before halftime. After his shot was redirected by Wu Lei, the ball found its way past Central Coast's young goalkeeper, Dylan Peraic-Cullen, putting Shanghai firmly in control.
Central Coast Mariners attempted a comeback in the second half, with Mikael Doka scoring a superb goal to reduce the deficit. However, Oscar responded again by assisting Matias Vargas, who restored Shanghai's two-goal cushion. Despite a late goal from Nicholas Duarte in injury time, Shanghai held on to secure the 3-2 win, sending the Mariners to their third consecutive defeat in the competition.
Elsewhere in the Asian Champions League, South Korea's Gwangju FC remained at the top of the East table with a 3-1 victory over Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim. Buriram United also moved into second place in the group after defeating Pohang Steelers 1-0, further intensifying the competition for the knockout stages.
