Even though the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus seems united in their opposition to a recent Supreme Court ruling that declared their majority status unconstitutional, one brave voice from within the party has stepped forward to expose the truth. The NDC Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Lawyer Zanetor Rawlings, has openly criticized her own party' s position, calling out their plans to defy the court' s decision as unlawful.
In an alleged WhatsApp group chat believed to be between NDC MPs, discussions have emerged of a calculated effort to disregard the Supreme Court' s ruling. The caucus had expressed their frustration after the Supreme Court overturned Speaker Alban Bagbin' s decision that declared four parliamentary seats vacant and gave the NDC a slim majority. The ruling shifted the power balance, forcing the NDC back into the minority.
However, amid the party' s resolve to reject the ruling, Zanetor Rawlings raised a strong objection. In the chat, she boldly stated that the Supreme Court' s decision was lawful, arguing that it must be respected. According to Zanetor, Speaker Bagbin' s ruling was incorrect, and any attempt to ignore the court would be in direct violation of the law.
The message from the texter " Senator" reads as follows:
" Colleagues and Leadership, are we not condoning illegality and by our deeds supporting the SC decision? Mr Speaker has ruled that the four seats are vacant, and a colleague whose seat is declared vacant is still on this platform, inhibiting other Colleagues from freely espousing their minds, and we look on unconcerned? " she replied.
Zanetor' s stance stands in stark contrast to the wider NDC caucus, which has been strategizing to create disruptions in Parliament during the next sitting. She highlighted the importance of upholding the rule of law, reminding her colleagues that defying the court' s judgment would not only be illegal but also set a dangerous precedent for future parliamentary decisions.
