A tragic incident has occurred in the Ashanti Region, leaving one person dead and three others hospitalized after a one-storey building collapsed in a waterlogged area. The incident took place on Friday, October 19, 2024, in Oti, a community within the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region. The victims, who were working on the building at the time, were caught off guard when the structure suddenly gave way, leading to the devastating outcome.
The deceased, whose identity has not been disclosed at this time, was working alongside three others when the incident happened. The survivors were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries. Medical professionals at the hospital are closely monitoring their condition, and though their injuries are reported to be serious, they are expected to recover. The death of one of their colleagues, however, has cast a shadow of grief over the entire situation, especially for the family of the deceased, who are mourning this sudden loss.
Eyewitnesses who were present during the tragic event have provided further details on what transpired. According to Kwame Anarfi, an eyewitness, the building collapse was largely due to the poor condition of the structure. He explained that the area where the building was located was waterlogged, and the foundation and pillars were not strong enough to support the weight of the first floor. As the work progressed, it appears that the added pressure from the construction overwhelmed the already weakened structure, causing it to collapse.

"The pillars couldn't handle the load, and the area has been flooded for days. When they were working on the first floor, the entire thing just came down on them," Kwame Anarfi recounted. The collapse happened so quickly that the workers had little time to react, resulting in the tragic loss of life and the hospitalization of the others.
Another eyewitness, speaking to Citi News, mentioned that emergency services arrived promptly at the scene after the collapse was reported. The Ghana National Fire Service played a crucial role in the rescue efforts, working swiftly to pull the trapped workers from the debris. According to the eyewitness, it was the quick response of the fire service that prevented the situation from being even worse, as their intervention allowed the survivors to be rescued in time and transported to the hospital for urgent medical care.
This tragic incident has left the local community in shock and has sparked concerns about the safety of construction practices in the area. Many are questioning whether proper building regulations and safety measures were followed during the construction of the building. In light of the collapse, there have been calls for a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Authorities in the Asokwa Municipality are expected to assess the site and provide more clarity on whether the construction adhered to building codes and regulations, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
In the meantime, the family of the deceased is left grieving the loss of their loved one, while the injured workers fight to recover from the physical and emotional trauma of the event. This building collapse serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety standards in construction, particularly in waterlogged or flood-prone areas, where the risk of such disasters is heightened.
The community of Oti, along with local authorities, mourns the tragic loss of life while calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations to ensure that such preventable tragedies do not occur again in the future.
