Theirry Henry, a legend of Arsenal and France, responded to Real Madrid's incredible comeback against Borussia Dortmund in only five words. Reigning champions Madrid and Dortmund faced off in a rematch of the previous season's final at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night, putting the UEFA Champions League front and center. Donyell Malen and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens gave the Bundesliga powerhouses a 2-0 lead in the first half.
But in the second half, they gave in a little as Vinicius Junior's hat-trick and goals from Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez gave Los Blancos a thrilling 5-2 comeback victory.
Henry, a former Arsenal and Barcelona player, was cited by CBS Sports as stating, "This is Champions League heritage," in response to the outcome. "I called it," explained the Frenchman. Why you guys are surprised by Madrid is beyond me. I've witnessed both the first and second halves, as well as the outcome, numerous times. That it surprises you surprises me. You've seen it, and I don't understand!
To be fair, I expected to have to say something because I've been a young manager and it happens to everyone. Just don't go into a back five that early against a squad like that when you're ahead 2-0. He did it too soon. Henry went on: "They played good defense in a back four. Why are you letting them stay in your half and why can't you defend in a back four now?"
Henry said, "I don't know," in response to CBS Sports host Kate Scott's question on if Dortmund "lost their bottle." I can promise you that it's obvious you shouldn't do that when I'm in the studio and you're behind that line. However, sometimes you play the moment rather than maintaining composure while you're on the opposing team, sitting on the bench, and you're ahead 2-0.
Early on, they had a couple of chances, but they weren't really clear. You changed to a back five, and I thought, "You were controlling the game in a back four." Of course, they're going to send bodies in. The Dortmund manager, Nuri Sahin, went too early into a back five, in my opinion. If you let a team like them stay in your box, they will punish you, and they did.
