NPP’s Running Mate Announces Duty-Free Car Import Benefit for Nurses Under Bawumia Presidency.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that nurses in Ghana will be eligible to import vehicles with engine capacities below 1.8 litres without paying import duties, provided Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wins the 2024 elections and becomes president in 2025. This announcement was made during an address to nursing students at the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute in Accra on Wednesday, October 23.
Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, shared the proposal to the delight of the nursing trainees, emphasizing that the policy reflects the NPP’s commitment to improving the welfare of healthcare professionals. “Dr. Bawumia, the incoming president of Ghana, will provide free duty on vehicles with engine capacities under 1.8 litres for nurses,” Napo declared.
He underscored the importance of nurses to the nation’s healthcare system and promised that an NPP-led administration would implement policies to enhance their living conditions. “The NPP recognizes and values the essential roles our nurses play in healthcare delivery across the country. We will make sure your lives improve,” he assured. “One of the measures is allowing the duty-free importation of vehicles under 1.8-litre engine capacity, along with other initiatives aimed at ensuring you live comfortably.”
In addition to this policy, Dr. Prempeh affirmed the continuation of the nursing trainee allowance, a program reintroduced by the NPP to provide financial support to nursing students. He warned that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, does not support the allowance and would cancel it if given the opportunity to govern again. “The NDC and John Mahama do not believe in the nursing trainee allowance. If they return to power, they will abolish it, making life difficult for you. So, you must reject the NDC,” Napo urged the trainees.
Dr. Prempeh also drew attention to the NPP government’s ongoing efforts to complete the Agenda 111 hospital project, a flagship initiative aimed at expanding healthcare infrastructure across the country. He emphasized that the completion of these hospitals would not only enhance healthcare delivery but also create new employment opportunities for nurses and other health professionals.
The NPP vice-presidential candidate concluded by encouraging nurses and nursing trainees to support Dr. Bawumia and vote for the party’s parliamentary candidates in the upcoming elections. “The NPP truly cares for nurses,” he said, rallying them to back the party and its vision for the healthcare sector.
