Kwesi Appiah, former Ghanaian international and head coach of the Sudan national football team, has been nominated for the 2024 CAF Coach of the Year award, a prestigious honor celebrating the best in African football. This nomination recognizes Appiah's remarkable impact in Sudan, where he took charge amid challenging conditions last year. Appiah's efforts have revitalized the Sudanese team, affectionately known as the Falcons of Jediane, leading them to the cusp of qualification for both the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 World Cup.

Under Appiah’s leadership, Sudan has delivered an impressive performance, winning seven of their 12 matches, drawing four, and losing just one. In a pivotal moment for the team, Sudan secured a 2-0 victory over Ghana in Libya, following a goalless first leg in Accra. With this win, Sudan is now just a draw away from earning a spot in the 2025 AFCON. Positioned second in Group F, Sudan trails Angola by a narrow three points, with two games left to secure their place in the tournament. The results reflect Appiah's ability to foster resilience and inspire his players, who continue to give their best despite the obstacles they face.

Sudan's World Cup ambitions also remain strong, as they lead Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 10 points, holding a two-point advantage over Senegal. This progress underscores Appiah’s tactical prowess and commitment to transforming Sudanese football into a competitive force. Appiah, who previously led Ghana's national team, faces tough competition for the Coach of the Year title from other accomplished coaches, including Emerse Fae, Hugo Broos, Pedro Gonçalves, and Jose Gomes.

The CAF Awards ceremony, set for December in Morocco, promises to be a thrilling celebration of African football, with Appiah's nomination a testament to his resilience and dedication in helping Sudan reach new heights in international football.
