Effiduase Asokore MP, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Outlines Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's Commitment to Sustainable Mining Solutions

Effiduase Asokore Member of Parliament (MP) and Middle Belt Coordinator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Campaign, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, engaged journalism students at the OTEC School of Journalism and Communication on Friday, October 25, 2024, discussing strategies aimed at curbing the illegal mining issue in Ghana, locally known as "galamsey."

Addressing the students, who are in training for comprehensive coverage of the upcoming 2024 elections, Dr. Afriye detailed NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s actionable plan to tackle illegal mining. Dr. Afriye emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s approach pivots from the force-heavy tactics of past administrations, focusing instead on practical and sustainable solutions to resolve the galamsey problem. Recognizing the adverse effects of illegal mining on the environment, local water sources, and the health of communities, the proposed plan seeks to balance environmental protection with economic opportunity.

Dr. Afriye explained that Dr. Bawumia’s proposed policy involves streamlining the mining license process, making it more accessible and less bureaucratic for small-scale miners. This move, he argued, aims to encourage legitimate mining activities and prevent illegal operations by integrating miners into the formal economy. Additionally, Bawumia’s plan would institute routine monitoring mechanisms to track compliance and mitigate illegal mining activities before they escalate.

“This multi-faceted approach doesn’t just target illegal mining but addresses its root causes,” Dr. Afriye stated. “We aim to offer sustainable alternatives and promote livelihoods that support communities rather than harm them.”

Encouraging critical media engagement, Dr. Afriye urged students to counteract misinformation regarding the NPP’s stance on illegal mining, particularly claims that the party is lenient on galamsey due to electoral considerations. He highlighted the importance of journalistic integrity, advocating for thorough investigation and balanced reporting as essential tools in combating fake news.

With this initiative, Dr. Afriye hopes the upcoming generation of journalists will play an active role in shaping an informed and engaged electorate, supporting efforts for transparent governance and sustainable environmental practices.
