Lydia Forson Blasts Meek Mill After Announcing Return to Ghana: "You Stay Mute on Our Issues"

Ghanaian actress and social activist Lydia Forson recently called out American rapper Meek Mill after he announced plans to visit Ghana again. Meek Mill, who first visited the West African nation in December 2022, shared his excitement for a return visit on social media. However, Forson was quick to remind him of the challenges faced by the Ghanaian people and expressed her frustration with international celebrities who, she argues, only engage with Ghana for its tourism appeal while ignoring the pressing social issues affecting everyday citizens.

Forson, known for her boldness and advocacy on social issues in Ghana, took to social media to voice her displeasure, stating that Meek Mill and others like him often "stay mute" on issues that matter to Ghanaians. She pointed out that, while celebrities are quick to praise the culture, warmth, and energy of the country, they fail to support the people by addressing the problems that affect them, such as political unrest, economic challenges, and the fight for basic rights.

In her post, Forson highlighted the increasing frustrations of Ghanaians with the lack of attention from both local and international figures, who she feels have a platform to draw attention to these issues but often ignore them. "Ghana is more than just a destination," Forson stressed. "We need our voices amplified, especially by those with global reach." She argued that influencers, artists, and public figures have a responsibility to advocate for the communities they visit if they want to authentically connect with the people and culture.

Meek Mill’s initial visit had already stirred up controversy, as he had filmed a music video at the Jubilee House, Ghana's presidential office, which led to backlash from Ghanaians who viewed it as a sign of disrespect. Though Meek apologized, Forson’s recent critique suggests that for her, simply visiting is not enough if there’s no support for the people.

Forson’s remarks resonate with a broader sentiment among Ghanaians, who feel that their struggles are too often ignored by high-profile visitors who focus on the nation’s beauty and tourism potential rather than the socioeconomic hardships many face. Her criticism underscores the call for foreign celebrities and influencers to take a more active role in supporting the communities they engage with, beyond the tourism spotlight.
