SHS Graduate Cries Out After WASSCE: "I Thought Life Would Be Fun"


A recent Senior High School (SHS) graduate has taken to social media to express her frustration and disappointment about life after completing her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). In a heartfelt post that resonated with many of her peers, she voiced her struggle with the realities of life after school, saying, "I thought life would be fun, but it’s not as I expected."


Like many students, she had dreamt of freedom after the rigorous routines of school life, envisioning a time filled with fun and the opportunity to explore life outside the classroom. However, the stark reality of post-SHS life hit her hard as she navigates the uncertainty that often comes after graduation. With no immediate plans for tertiary education or employment, she admitted to feeling lost and pressured by the expectations to either continue her studies, find a job, or at least begin contributing to her household.


“I thought finishing SHS would be the start of a life filled with joy, but all I feel is confusion and pressure,” she shared in her post, which quickly gained attention from other graduates facing similar challenges. Many commented with support, echoing the sentiment of disillusionment and the sense of struggle as they transition into adulthood. “It feels like I was thrown into the deep end without knowing how to swim,” one commenter wrote, capturing the overwhelming experience many fresh graduates face when they encounter the real-world challenges outside the school environment.


For many SHS graduates, the transition period between school and either further education or employment is fraught with challenges. In Ghana, limited job opportunities, high unemployment rates, and the competitive nature of university admissions often add to the anxiety that fresh graduates face. As a result, many feel unprepared and unsupported, left with the stark reality that life after school is not as simple as they once thought.


This graduate’s post has sparked a larger conversation about the need for life skills training and support systems for young people as they transition out of school. She and others in similar situations are calling for better resources and guidance to help graduates navigate the realities of life after WASSCE, including financial literacy, job readiness, and coping mechanisms for the uncertainties that come with adulthood.
