Tragedy in Oguaa: Assemblyman Dies of Electrocution While Fixing Streetlight

In a tragic accident, George Agyei Frempong, the Assemblyman for Oguaa in the New Juaben South municipality, Eastern Region, was electrocuted on Saturday while attempting to repair a streetlight in his community. Agyei Frempong, believed to be in his late thirties, was a carpenter by trade and not a trained electrician. According to witnesses, he received a fatal electric shock while working on the pole, causing him to fall. He was rushed to the Eastern Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Agyei Frempong had recently been elected as an assembly member in the most recent district assembly elections. Known for his dedication to the community, he undertook the streetlight repair himself in response to complaints about poor lighting in the area, despite lacking professional training. His death has left the community in mourning, as residents remember his commitment to serving them.

This incident brings to mind a similar tragedy involving Manasseh Addison Sackey, known as Teacher Obour, who was the assemblyman for the Teberebie electoral area. Last December, Teacher Obour drowned while campaigning for re-election. While crossing a river in a canoe without safety equipment, the vessel capsized. Despite his untimely death, Teacher Obour posthumously won the election, reflecting his community’s deep respect for his service and dedication.

Both Agyei Frempong and Teacher Obour’s tragic deaths highlight the personal sacrifices local leaders often make to serve their communities. These leaders took it upon themselves to address pressing needs, even at personal risk, revealing a significant gap in resources and safety measures for such initiatives. Agyei Frempong’s electrocution also underscores the importance of proper training and safety equipment when working with electricity, an area where professional intervention is crucial.

The loss of Agyei Frempong has sparked conversations on the need for local government support in providing resources and safety for assembly members engaging in community development projects. The Eastern Region mourns a leader whose dedication to his community was marked by selfless action and genuine care.
