Ghana’s President Pledges Commitment to Peaceful December 7 Elections
Ahead of Ghana’s December 7, 2024, elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured citizens of a peaceful, transparent process that upholds the democratic rights of all Ghanaians. Speaking on his behalf at the second General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) in Accra, Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei emphasized the government’s dedication to fair elections, calling on all citizens to support this commitment to peace.
The CoSPAL assembly, presided over by Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, gathered over 120 participants, including African legislative leaders, to strengthen collaboration and address shared continental challenges. The conference highlighted Ghana's ongoing role as a model of democracy in Africa, stressing the importance of elections as the foundation of democratic governance.
President Akufo-Addo affirmed that Ghana's government, in partnership with the Electoral Commission and security agencies, is committed to creating an environment free from fear or interference, where every citizen can participate in the electoral process. He noted that Ghana’s democratic legacy has been built through resilience and dedication to principles of justice, equality, and freedom, adding that upholding democracy requires inclusive participation and respect for all voices.
The President emphasized CoSPAL's crucial role in protecting democratic rights and promoting stability across Africa, acknowledging the obstacles to democracy that many African nations face, such as political instability and health crises. He encouraged a borderless approach to tackling these challenges, stressing the importance of free movement, economic integration, and shared policies.
