During the 2024 Ballon d'Or awards event in Paris on Monday, Rodri and Aitana Bonmati were voted the world's finest football players. After winning every trophy imaginable at the club level last season, Barcelona's midfielder Bonmati won the Ballon d'Or Feminin for the second year in a row, helping the team achieve a historic quadruple. The Spanish team chose not to attend the event in France after Manchester City midfielder Rodri defeated Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. to win the men's prize.

Ilkay Gundogan is another high-profile player to take to X to express his thoughts on Rodri's victory. Unlike many of those who already have, though, he backed the decision to reward his Manchester City team-mate, perhaps unsurprisingly.
