Bishop Salifu Amoako's Son Discharged from Hospital Following Tragic East Legon Accident; Not Fit for Police Interrogation
A teenage driver involved in a serious car accident in East Legon on October 12, 2024, has been discharged from the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), according to a recent medical report obtained by 3News. Elrad Salifu Amoako, 16, the son of Bishop Salifu Amoako, was driving a Jaguar SUV when he collided with a 4x4 Acura vehicle, resulting in a tragic incident that claimed two young lives and injured several others.
The accident occurred when Amoako, driving a Jaguar SUV with registration number GN 7801-20 and carrying one passenger, crashed into an Acura with registration number GR 2542-23 on Mensah Wood Street, East Legon. The Acura, driven by Joseph Ackah, had five occupants, including two children who tragically lost their lives. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, leaving them charred and beyond recognition.
According to the UGMC medical report, Amoako was discharged on October 28 but remains unable to stand or bear weight on his right leg and is not fit to be questioned by the police at this time. His doctor indicated that further outpatient treatment is needed, and Amoako’s condition will be reviewed periodically until he fully recovers. Police authorities have stated they will await medical clearance before proceeding with any official interrogation.
The incident's toll has been profound, especially for the families of Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh, both 12 years old, who lost their lives. Following the accident, three of the Acura’s five passengers were rescued, and two of them sustained minor injuries. After receiving treatment, they were subsequently discharged from medical care.
This tragic accident highlights ongoing concerns about youth driving in Ghana and the serious consequences of unqualified and unlicensed drivers behind the wheel. It also underscores the importance of enforcing road safety regulations, particularly in urban areas where heavy traffic and high pedestrian activity pose significant risks.
In a country where road safety remains a pressing issue, the East Legon accident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of stricter regulations for young and unlicensed drivers, as well as stronger enforcement mechanisms to prevent such incidents. As authorities await the minor driver’s recovery, it is likely that this accident will reignite discussions around road safety laws and potential reforms needed to prevent future tragedies.
