EC Calls on Ghana Freedom Party to Nominate New Candidate After Akua Donkor’s Passing

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has requested that the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) nominate a new presidential candidate within 10 days, following the recent passing of their flagbearer, Madam Akua Donkor. This directive, issued on October 29, 2024, was accompanied by a temporary suspension of the printing of presidential ballot papers, which were near completion for the upcoming December 7 elections. The EC stated that they made this decision after receiving formal notification of Madam Donkor’s death.

In a public statement, the EC expressed condolences to the family and supporters of Madam Donkor, highlighting her role as a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics. The statement read, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new candidate and inform the Commission accordingly. In the meantime, the Commission has suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was near completion.”

Madam Akua Donkor was widely recognized as the founder and leader of the GFP and was known for her passionate advocacy for farmers and women’s rights. Her unique approach and dedication to grassroots issues made her an influential voice, especially for Ghana’s rural communities. She held a prominent place in Ghanaian politics, often speaking candidly on national issues and advocating for policies to support marginalized communities.

Her passing leaves a significant void for the GFP and her supporters, as the party is now faced with the challenge of swiftly selecting a new candidate to replace her on the presidential ballot. The GFP’s choice of successor will be crucial as they prepare to engage voters in the final weeks leading up to the general election. With elections fast approaching, the GFP’s prompt action is essential to secure a place on the ballot.

This situation has underscored the importance of contingency planning within political parties, particularly in times of unforeseen leadership changes. The EC's swift decision to halt the ballot printing emphasizes the institution's commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process. For the GFP, this period marks a critical juncture as they identify a candidate capable of continuing Donkor’s legacy and resonating with the party’s base.

The EC’s mandate to the GFP serves as a reminder of the essential role political parties play in shaping democratic governance. With December 7 approaching, the EC's actions have underscored the importance of adhering to electoral timelines while balancing sensitivity in times of loss. Ghana’s electoral process has often been praised for its transparency, and the EC’s response to the GFP’s situation reflects their dedication to maintaining these standards.

As the GFP prepares to name a new leader, political analysts and citizens alike will closely watch how this development impacts the party's direction and influence in the election. This transition marks a new chapter for the GFP, as they adapt and move forward without the leadership of Madam Akua Donkor, who was both a trailblazer and an advocate for Ghana’s underrepresented populations.
