The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has declared that Erald Salifu Amoako, son of Rev Salifu Amoako, is currently unfit for police questioning following an accident that resulted in the deaths of two young women earlier this month. This decision stems from a medical report issued on October 29, 2024, by Dr. Fred Salawu, which details Erald's serious injuries sustained in the incident.
Erald was admitted to UGMC on October 12 after being referred from Legon Hospital. His injuries included an open right ankle dislocation and facial lacerations, and he experienced a brief loss of consciousness. He underwent multiple surgeries, including debridement and external fixation of the right ankle on October 14, as well as split skin grafting on October 21 to address a post-traumatic ulcer.
The report states that Erald is currently mobilizing without weight on his right leg and was discharged on October 28 for outpatient review. Due to his medical condition, UGMC has concluded that he is not fit for police interrogation at this time. Dr. Salawu indicated that authorities would be notified once Erald's treatment is completed.
This announcement has ignited anger and concern among the families of the deceased victims, who fear that the hospital's declaration may obstruct the police's efforts to achieve justice. A relative of one of the victims expressed frustration, questioning the reasoning behind Erald's unavailability for interrogation when he has been discharged from the hospital. “We are just asking for accountability for the lives lost,” they stated, emphasizing the need for transparency in the investigation.
The police have yet to comment on the medical report, but families are urging a thorough investigation into the accident, which occurred when Erald was reportedly speeding in Accra. The UGMC's decision continues to generate public debate as the community awaits further developments in this case.
