Bawku Naba Bans NPP from Kusaug Traditional Area, Accusing Party of Instigating Unrest

Bawku, Ghana – October 28, 2024

Zugraan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the revered overlord of the Bawku kingdom, has officially banned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from the Kusaug Traditional Area. In a strongly worded statement issued on his behalf, the Bawku Naba labeled the NPP as a "tribal bigot" and declared that its members should not enter the area. This significant decision comes amid renewed clashes in Bawku, which have tragically claimed lives and heightened regional tensions.

The Bawku Naba’s statement accuses the NPP of being behind recent conflicts that have sparked unrest and destabilized the area. According to the traditional ruler, the party’s involvement has undermined the peace and security of the region, leaving the Kusaug Traditional Area with no choice but to take action to protect its people.

         Context of the Ban

The decision follows a series of troubling events that have contributed to growing unrest in Bawku. In early October, tensions flared when a violent confrontation occurred between police officers and customs officials at the Missiga checkpoint over a smuggled consignment of cocoa. This clash highlighted not only security challenges in the area but also lingering inter-agency frictions that some residents believe exacerbate the region’s instability.

Additionally, Bawku has witnessed prolonged ethnic conflicts, with violent disputes primarily between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups over chieftaincy rights. These tensions have deep roots and have led to multiple casualties, sparking concern across Ghana and prompting calls for peaceful resolution.

In response to escalating violence, Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, extended the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas on October 22, 2024. The curfew now restricts movement from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., an effort intended to curb violence and protect lives.

The Impact of the NPP Ban

The Bawku Naba’s ban on the NPP signifies a critical moment in the region’s political landscape, underscoring the influence of traditional authority in addressing what it perceives as external threats to the area’s stability. With the ban in place, it remains to be seen how the NPP will respond, as it risks alienating itself from a key area within Ghana’s Northern Region. Political analysts suggest that the NPP may need to initiate dialogue with traditional leaders to resolve this dispute and address the grievances that led to the ban.

For the Kusaug people, the Naba’s stance reflects a commitment to preserving peace and addressing sources of tension in the region. Traditional authorities in Bawku play a vital role in maintaining harmony, and this decision reinforces their influence in the community’s social and political fabric. The Bawku Naba’s statement makes it clear that the region’s leaders are willing to take bold measures against any entities seen as contributing to discord.

Looking Forward: A Path to Peace

The current situation in Bawku highlights the intricate relationship between political entities, traditional authority, and ethnic identity in Ghana. As the region seeks a path to peace, it will be crucial for all parties, including the NPP, to recognize the importance of respecting traditional institutions and working toward a peaceful, inclusive approach.

Moving forward, many stakeholders, from political representatives to security agencies, must engage in active dialogue with traditional rulers like the Bawku Naba to ensure that differences are addressed in a manner that fosters stability and development for all residents of the Kusaug Traditional Area. The ban on the NPP serves as a reminder of the power traditional leaders hold in maintaining social cohesion, especially in regions where cultural identity and political alliances are closely intertwined.

In the meantime, the people of Bawku look to their leaders, both traditional and political, to prioritize peace and uphold the values of unity and cooperation as they navigate this complex period. The hope is that these efforts will bring lasting calm to a region with a rich history and a deep desire for peace.
