Ghanaian Politician Akua Donkor Passes Away Ahead of Presidential Bid
Akua Donkor, the leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, passed away on October 29, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra. Her running mate, Kwabena Agyekum Appiah Kubi, also known as Roman Fada, shared insights into her recent health struggles, confirming that Donkor had been unwell for several days and was treated at multiple hospitals before her condition worsened.
According to Kubi, Donkor was initially admitted to Nsawam Government Hospital on October 26. When her health showed no signs of improvement, she was transferred to Ridge Hospital in Accra on October 28, where she was placed in intensive care. Sadly, she succumbed the following day. Her family, including her daughters, was present during her final hours, though an official cause of death has not been released.
Donkor’s passing came as she was preparing for her fourth attempt at Ghana’s presidency in the upcoming 2024 general election. Known for her commitment to the Ghana Freedom Party, she aimed to challenge the political status quo and had secured the third position on the presidential ballot. Her political journey began as the assemblywoman for Herman in Ghana’s Eastern Region, and despite setbacks, her determination to enter the presidential race remained steadfast.
Donkor’s earlier attempts at the presidency had faced challenges, including her disqualification as an independent candidate in 2012. Undeterred, she continued her political pursuits, hoping to influence Ghana’s governance.
In the months leading up to her passing, Donkor spoke about the personal toll of her journey, even humorously suggesting that she might need a "ceremonial husband" to support her image in the campaign. This comment highlighted her sense of humor and resilience, qualities her supporters admired.
Her passing has left a gap in Ghanaian politics, particularly within the Ghana Freedom Party, where she was a leading figure. As her family and supporters mourn her loss, the future of her political vision remains uncertain. Donkor’s contributions and determination have left a lasting impact on Ghana’s political landscape, inspiring others to pursue leadership despite challenges.
