Protest in Bawku Calls for Curfew Removal or Extension of Sanctions to Other Regions

Bawku, October 29, 2024  — On Tuesday, Bawku witnessed a gathering of demonstrators calling for the removal of the curfew imposed on the town. The protesters argued that the sanctions are unfairly affecting only certain regions and insisted that, if the curfew continues, it should be extended to other areas facing similar challenges, specifically mentioning the town of Walewale in the North East Region.

The demonstration saw residents of Bawku voicing their frustration with the curfew, which they claim has heavily impacted the town's daily activities, economic stability, and social life. Businesses close earlier, transportation is limited, and local cultural and social gatherings are curtailed. Protesters argued that these restrictions stifle growth and morale in the community, with no clear timeline or roadmap to resolve the underlying issues.

Carrying banners and chanting slogans, the protesters marched peacefully through key areas of the town. Many highlighted the regional impact of the curfew, pointing out that similar security issues are prevalent in other towns, such as Walewale. They questioned why other regions under similar conditions have not received equal sanctions, calling for fair and equal treatment across the northern regions of Ghana.

“We are not against measures to maintain peace,” one protester explained, “but there must be consistency. If there’s a curfew here due to security concerns, then the same measures should apply in areas like Walewale that face similar threats.”

The protesters also addressed the impact of the curfew on local education and healthcare. Students and workers in Bawku face increased difficulties commuting, affecting school attendance and access to essential services. Residents argue that prolonged curfew measures could have lasting consequences on youth development and economic opportunities.

Local authorities have acknowledged the community's concerns, with a spokesperson confirming that they are in active discussions with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) regarding the possibility of adjusting the curfew or considering alternative approaches to security. They reassured residents that their grievances are taken seriously, and steps will be taken to assess the effectiveness and fairness of current measures.

The protest reflects a larger sentiment within the community about finding a balance between security and freedom. Bawku residents have reiterated their commitment to peace but seek policies that do not disproportionately burden specific communities.

For now, the people of Bawku await further developments from the authorities and continue to press for a fair and equal approach to regional security measures.
