Former President John Dramani Mahama has said this year's election should be about the economy and not the "useless" questions emanating from the camp of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia at campaign rallies. The New Democratic Congress presidential candidate made this comment during his recent campaign in the Ashanti region while both candidates begin to make strong appeals to voters ahead of the much-anticipated election.
Mahama, who is desirous to regain the presidency he lost to President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016 and again in 2020, emphasized that the economy was at the forefront of crucial tests: snowballing inflation, joblessness, and increasing public debt. He condemned Bawumia's approach, insinuating it drifts away from the core issues that affect ordinary citizens.
"The economy is in crisis, and the people need solutions, not questions that do nothing to alleviate their suffering," Mahama declared. He cited high prices for basic goods and services driving the public into a hopeless situation. The former president promised to pursue policies that ensure economic recovery and job creation.
The Vice President has been at the forefront of the agendum for digital transformation in Ghana's economy and does argue over several policies and economic measures that have cropped up. However, Mahama's remarks indicate a strategic shift in the electoral discourse to push for a more focused conversation on the dire state of the economy.
Analysts said this emphasis on economic issues represents a calculated gamble by Mahama, apparently to strike a chord with disgruntled voters who feel that the current government has lost its grip on the economy.
