Mfantsipim School Clinches 2024 NSMQ Trophy with a Dramatic Finale.
Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast lived up to its ambition of “host and win,” as it narrowly defeated St. Augustine’s College by a single point to emerge champions of the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). The gripping contest, held on Wednesday, October 30, was an emotional rollercoaster, with all three finalists battling fiercely for the coveted trophy. However, in the final moments, Mfantsipim seized victory, leaving the audience in Cape Coast exhilarated by the thrilling outcome.
Throughout the contest, it was clear that the NSMQ trophy was destined to remain in Cape Coast. St. Augustine’s College led the competition until the final lap, when Mfantsipim delivered the decisive blow by answering a critical riddle. That one correct answer added three points to their tally, propelling them from 44 to 47 points just enough to edge out St. Augustine’s College, which finished with 46 points. The third finalist, Keta Senior High Technical School (Keta SHTS), ended with 32 points, completing the podium in third place.
Final Scores
Mfantsipim School: 47 points

Keta SHTS: 32 points
The victory came with several rewards. Mfantsipim School walked away with the 2024 NSMQ trophy, a cash prize of over GH₵70,000, and other gifts. Meanwhile, Keta SHTS took home more than GH₵35,000 in cash and other goodies for their third-place finish.
The final showdown was packed with tension and excitement, a fitting climax to this year’s competition. All three schools were determined to make their mark, reflecting the fierce academic rivalries that have come to define the NSMQ. The contest began evenly, with Mfantsipim and St. Augustine’s tied at 24 points each at the end of the first round, leaving Keta trailing with 13 points.
In subsequent rounds, the competition intensified. By the second round, St. Augustine’s College had pulled ahead with 34 points, while Mfantsipim followed with 31 points and Keta lagged behind at 12. Round three saw the gap widen further, with St. Augustine’s leading at 39 points, Mfantsipim at 34, and Keta at 16.
However, the fourth round set the stage for an electrifying finale, with St. Augustine’s sitting at 46 points and Mfantsipim close behind with 44 points. The final, riddle round proved decisive. Mfantsipim answered just one riddle correctly but that was all it needed to claim victory.
The 2024 NSMQ, hosted for the first time in Cape Coast, marked a historic shift from its usual venue in Accra. Cape Coast, renowned for its educational institutions, provided a fitting backdrop for the grand finale, allowing regional audiences to experience the competition’s excitement firsthand.
