Sundowns Bounce Back to Winning Ways in Thrilling Midweek Betway Premiership Action

The midweek action in the Betway Premiership delivered intense moments, with Orlando Pirates extending their flawless start to the 2024-25 season, while Mamelodi Sundowns rebounded to winning ways, and Kaizer Chiefs managed a thrilling comeback against Magesi FC.

Orlando Pirates, the league leaders, continue to set the pace with a perfect record, having secured six wins in six matches. Their latest victory came on Tuesday night against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium, where they claimed a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Thalente Mbatha and Relebohile Mofokeng. This win further solidified their position at the top of the table, putting them three points ahead of the nearest competitors, Sundowns. TS Galaxy, meanwhile, found themselves slipping to the bottom of the league as AmaZulu secured their first victory of the season by defeating Chippa United 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, thanks to goals from Hendrick Ekstein and Celimpilo Ngema. Sekhukhune United also made strides, moving up to third place with a 2-0 win over Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Wednesday's fixtures saw Mamelodi Sundowns reassert their form with a dominant 3-0 win over Cape Town City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The Brazilians, who had suffered a surprise loss to Polokwane City in their previous match, returned to their usual high standard. A double from star striker Peter Shalulile, alongside a powerful strike from Lucas Ribeiro, ensured a commanding victory for Sundowns, maintaining their second-place standing.

Polokwane City climbed to third place, courtesy of a last-minute goal by Bonginkosi Dlamini that secured them a 1-0 win over Royal AM at Harry Gwala Stadium. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs showed remarkable resilience in a thrilling encounter against Magesi FC. Initially down by two goals after Wonderboy Makhubu and Edmore Chirambadare gave Magesi a solid lead, Chiefs bounced back with Mduduzi Shabalala netting a quick brace, earning the Amakhosi a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

The round also featured a goalless match between Golden Arrows and SuperSport United at Mpumalanga Stadium. The week’s fixtures will wrap up with a final game on Thursday night, as Stellenbosch FC takes on Marumo Gallants at Cape Town Stadium.

This week's games showcased the competitive nature of the Betway Premiership, with several teams making impactful moves on the standings. Pirates remain the team to beat, but Sundowns and Polokwane City are both hot on their trail, promising an exciting title race in the coming months.
