Potential Candidates to Replace Patrick Mabedi as Malawi Coach
Following Patrick Mabedi's recent dismissal as Malawi's national football team coach, the search is underway to find a replacement who can bring stability and success to the Flames. Mabedi, a former Kaizer Chiefs coach and captain, parted ways with the team midway through his contract after enduring a challenging period with five consecutive losses. This unexpected coaching vacancy opens the door for various prominent figures within Malawi's football scene, with some familiar faces potentially stepping in for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixture against Burundi on November 15.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has suggested appointing a caretaker manager temporarily while they seek a permanent head coach. Here’s a look at some possible candidates to take over.
1. Thabo Senong
Recently arriving in Malawi to work with the Luwinga Inclusive Academy as a FIFA talent development coach, Senong could be a viable option for the Flames' caretaker role. Known for his experience with Lesotho's national team and previous involvement with South Africa's Bafana Bafana, the former Sekhukhune United assistant coach brings a wealth of experience. His familiarity with national team football could make him an attractive choice for a short-term appointment.
2. Kalisto Pasuwa
A seasoned coach in Malawi's football scene, Pasuwa has led FCB Nyasa Big Bullets to five consecutive TNM Super League titles. Although he's previously been linked to the Flames' coaching role, Pasuwa has indicated satisfaction with his current job. However, his proven track record and local success may lead FAM to consider him again, potentially persuading him to lead the national team.
3. Peter Mponda
Mponda, a former Leopards player, has emerged as a prominent coach in the TNM Super League. He has guided Silver Strikers to the top of the league this season, demonstrating his coaching potential. His tactical knowledge and familiarity with Malawian football make him an appealing candidate for the Flames.
4. John Maduka
A celebrated figure in South African football, Maduka currently manages Royal AM in the Premier Soccer League. While he hasn't been involved with Malawi's football scene since his retirement from the Flames in 2005, his impressive coaching resume and loyalty to his team could make him a long-shot candidate. Nevertheless, Maduka’s experience might appeal to FAM.
5. McDonald Mtetemera
Mtetemera has gained respect within Malawi’s football community, especially after leading Chitipa United to a top-four finish last season. Though currently facing challenges with Crerk Sporting Club, where he is temporarily suspended, his familiarity with local players and systems may make him a practical caretaker choice.
With the Flames looking for a fresh start, FAM has a pool of promising candidates who could potentially revive the team’s performance. As the 2025 AFCON qualifiers approach, the decision for a new coach will be crucial for setting the Flames on the right path forward.
