Mfantsipim Triumphs in a Thrilling 2024 NSMQ Final, Securing Their Third Trophy
In a captivating finale of the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Mfantsipim School emerged victorious, claiming their third NSMQ trophy after a stunning performance in the final round. Known affectionately as "Botwe," Mfantsipim School staged a memorable comeback, outscoring St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) and Keta Senior High School (KETASCO) to secure the title.
The intense competition saw AUGUSCO initially taking the lead by a single point up until the fifth and final round. However, Mfantsipim turned the tables, answering a pivotal riddle question that catapulted them into the lead by a single point. At the close of the contest, Mfantsipim had amassed 47 points, narrowly defeating St. Augustine’s College, which scored 46 points. Keta SHS rounded out the contest with 32 points.
In addition to the prestigious trophy, Mfantsipim was awarded a cash prize of GHC10,000, courtesy of Pepsodent, in recognition of their high score in the day's events. This victory marks their third NSMQ title, with prior wins in 1999 and 2014. Botwe has a history of strong performances in the NSMQ, having reached the finals five times and securing second place twice, in 2000 and 2016.
St. Augustine’s College had hoped to achieve their third NSMQ win, having previously secured titles in 2007 and 2019. Meanwhile, KETASCO, the reigning champions of the Volta-Oti Zonal competition, was aiming for its first national title after multiple appearances in the NSMQ semi-finals in recent years, including 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023. While the "Dzo Lalians" demonstrated resilience, they could not overcome Mfantsipim’s momentum in the final round, despite answering two riddle questions to boost their score from 27 to 32 points.
The 2024 NSMQ final underscored the fierce academic rivalry and dedication of Ghana’s top secondary schools, with each institution bringing its best to this celebrated competition. The National Science and Maths Quiz has become a prestigious platform for academic excellence, inspiring both students and spectators across Ghana. This year’s contest not only added another chapter to Mfantsipim’s legacy but also highlighted the competitive spirit of AUGUSCO and KETASCO, whose efforts reflected their commitment to excellence in science and mathematics education.
As these schools prepare for future competitions, this NSMQ final will be remembered as a closely fought battle that showcased the talent and determination of Ghana’s next generation of leaders and thinkers.
