Recently, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia hailed the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for the transformation he brought into the Ghana Police Service. During a national security forum in Accra, Bawumia praised Dampare's new ideas and effort to modernize the police and emphasized how much those were making a difference in improving public safety and building trust within the community.

The appointment of Dr. Dampare in August 2021 heralded a number of reforms to conditions that had persisted in the Service for a long time. During his tenure, the police have moved toward technological, modern policing methods, increased training of personnel, and community policing. He explained that these are so done at the operational level for efficiency, adding that it is meant to make the force more accountable.

Dr. Dampare is a true reformer," Bawumia said. "His vision of a more professional, responsive, and community-oriented police service has started yielding results. We are seeing a police that places high value on transparency and public trust.

He cited, as examples, such a measure like setting up a police public relations unit that has helped to bridge the gap between the police and the public. He also hailed the IGP for dealing with issues of corruption and acts of indiscipline in the service, which only acted to blur its image. These changes, the Vice President reiterated, were those necessary to bring into being a police service on which the Ghanaian people can have their confidence.

He also extended his appreciation to the cooperation between the police and other groups within the community, which has been very helpful in the prevention of crime and engendering a sense of security in the populace. He called on other security agencies to take a leaf from the book of the police by being reform-minded in such a manner as to affirm the government's commitment to national security.

As Dr. Dampare continues with the implementation of his vision for the Ghana Police Service, the endorsement by Bawumia sends strong signals that the government supports ongoing reforms. From increased public confidence to falling crime rates, the future of policing seems bright under the command of Dampare.
