Ghanaian gospel musician Broda Sammy has expressed deep concern over the financial struggles faced by young women in church communities, suggesting that these hardships are pushing some towards hookup culture as a means of survival. Speaking on the United Showbiz program on October 26, 2024, he urged churches to provide more tangible support for their struggling members, warning that a lack of assistance could have serious consequences for the church community.
During his appearance, Broda Sammy remarked, “Some female church members are now engaged in hookups; there is no money.” He highlighted that while churches often focus on encouraging donations and offerings, many have significant financial resources that could be used to help alleviate the burdens of their congregants. However, these funds are not always directed toward community support, leaving some members without the necessary assistance.
He pointed out that many congregations have been established for over fifty years and, as owners of their properties, they do not face significant rental or overhead costs. This financial stability, he argued, should enable churches to offer more meaningful aid to those in need. “Some churches have been in existence for more than 50 years. They do not have many expenses because they own most of their property. Yet, some members have been selling tomatoes at the markets for years, contributing their little 1 cedi as an offering without receiving any help,” he noted.
Broda Sammy warned that if the current approach continues, church attendance could dwindle. He emphasized the need for churches to reevaluate their strategies for community engagement and soul-winning, urging that the welfare of their members should be prioritized. “One day, there will be nobody to attend,” he cautioned, highlighting the urgency for change within church communities to support those in need and prevent further disconnection from the congregation.
