Naomi Girma Leads USA to 3-0 Victory Over Argentina in Dominant Friendly
Star defender Naomi Girma showcased her emerging talent as she scored her first two international goals, propelling the United States women's national team to a 3-0 victory over Argentina in a friendly match in Louisville, Kentucky, on Wednesday. This match marked the U.S. team’s first appearance since their coach, Emma Hayes, was honored as FIFA’s Women’s Coach of the Year at the Ballon d'Or awards.
Girma, widely regarded for her defensive prowess, opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a close-range header. Rose Lavelle set up the play with a precise free kick intended for Lindsey Horan, only for the ball to bounce loose after Argentina’s keeper, Solana Pereyra, collided with a teammate. Girma seized the opportunity and sent a powerful header into the net, putting the U.S. up 1-0.
Just minutes before halftime, Argentina's defensive woes continued with an own goal by Aldana Cometti. A USA corner caused chaos in the box, leading Cometti to accidentally deflect the ball into her own net, giving the United States a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Girma struck again in the 49th minute. Positioned expertly, she headed in another goal from 12 yards, delivering an impressive finish that extended the U.S. lead to 3-0. Her performance not only highlighted her defensive talent but also her potential as a scoring threat.
A Triumphant Streak Under Hayes
The victory over Argentina extended the United States' unbeaten run under Hayes to 13 games, including 12 wins and one draw since her appointment in May. Hayes, previously known for her success with Chelsea, has revitalized the U.S. squad, culminating in their triumphant Olympic campaign in Paris this year. Wednesday’s match was the concluding game of a three-match friendly series celebrating the United States' fifth Olympic gold.
With the Paris Olympics behind them, Hayes and her squad have already set their sights on the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. As Hayes noted, the team’s focus is firmly on the future, with aspirations to secure a historic fifth World Cup title to pair with their impressive tally of Olympic golds.
