Speaker Bagbin Leads Ghanaian Delegation to Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Australia

The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has departed for Sydney, Australia, where he will participate in the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International Conference. The event, taking place from November 3 to 8, 2024, convenes parliamentary representatives from across the Commonwealth to discuss significant issues impacting governance, democracy, and policy-making.

Speaker Bagbin is leading an esteemed Ghanaian delegation that includes former Majority Leader and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu; the current Leaders of the House; both Whips; the Clerk to Parliament; and other key officials from the Parliamentary Service. This gathering is a platform for Commonwealth nations to share experiences and collaborate on solutions to the shared challenges facing their countries.

A statement from the Parliamentary Service Public Affairs Division, issued on October 30, outlined the delegation’s objectives for the conference. It highlighted the significance of the event for strengthening international collaboration and its expected impact on parliamentary functions back in Ghana. Topics on the agenda include frameworks for policy and governance, strategies to promote democratic values, and approaches to address pressing social and economic issues, with Ghana’s delegation expected to actively contribute and draw insights from the discussions.

One focal point of the conference will be Speaker Bagbin’s transition from his role as Immediate Past President of CPA International. He will officially hand over responsibilities to the new CPA President, the Speaker of the New South Wales Parliament. The CPA International Conference, an annual gathering, fosters global dialogue and cooperation among parliamentary leaders, promoting the exchange of legislative best practices aimed at enhancing democratic governance across Commonwealth member states.

This conference provides a unique opportunity for Ghana’s delegation to engage with global peers, exploring innovative solutions to governance issues and fostering a culture of collaboration that can enhance legislative work. By participating in these discussions, Ghana's representatives aim to gather insights that can strengthen parliamentary functions and contribute to effective policy-making at home.

The CPA’s work is integral to creating a forum where representatives can discuss critical topics such as effective governance, political stability, and economic resilience. This year’s conference places a strong emphasis on enhancing legislative cooperation and promoting democracy, which aligns with Ghana's own efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions.

This international engagement underscores the importance of Ghana’s involvement in global conversations on democracy and governance. The outcomes of the discussions in Sydney are anticipated to provide valuable insights and strategies that Ghana's parliament can implement to foster greater transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in governance.
