Afriyie Akoto Joins Bawumia in Strategic Campaign Push Across Ashanti Region

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture, has officially joined Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, on a critical campaign tour in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. This partnership reflects a unified front within the NPP as the 2024 elections approach, with Dr. Akoto bringing his expertise in agricultural policy to bolster the campaign’s reach and impact.

According to sources within the party, Dr. Akoto’s involvement is particularly significant due to his strong ties to the Ashanti Region and his status as a leading figure in agricultural economics. He is also the son of Baffour Osei Akoto, a key figure in the United Party (UP) tradition, an important legacy in the region’s political history. His presence is expected to invigorate the NPP’s campaign efforts, particularly among rural communities and the region’s 3.6 million farmers, a demographic essential to securing the NPP’s success.

Dr. Bawumia’s campaign in the Ashanti Region begins on November 4, 2024, and is set to continue for two weeks, during which the team will focus on promoting economic reforms and policy initiatives central to the NPP’s platform. The campaign agenda emphasizes the development of a digital economy, creating an accessible credit system to boost economic growth, implementing a business-friendly tax regime, promoting environmental sustainability, and expanding the “gold-for-oil” policy to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi.

Dr. Akoto, a “farmers’ friend” due to his contributions to agriculture under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, will reinforce the government’s track record in supporting the agricultural sector. During his tenure, various agricultural programs aimed at enhancing productivity and farmers’ welfare were introduced, a message he intends to highlight in an effort to secure votes from the farming communities in Ashanti and beyond. His goal is to remind farmers of the substantial support they have received, which he argues has led to tangible improvements in Ghana’s agricultural sector.

The unity displayed by Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Akoto, as well as other former presidential primary contenders, reflects the NPP’s consolidated approach to its “Break the 8” campaign. Their collective effort underscores a shared commitment to ensuring the NPP retains power in the upcoming election, with each leader bringing their strengths to the campaign. Dr. Bawumia’s focus on economic transformation and Dr. Akoto’s advocacy for agricultural advancement aim to resonate with both urban and rural voters across the region.

This collaboration signals a concerted effort to address the diverse concerns of Ghanaian voters and demonstrates the NPP’s readiness to tackle the nation’s challenges with a united leadership. As the campaign continues, both leaders are anticipated to rally significant support in Ashanti, a key stronghold for the party.
