Former President John Dramani Mahama has turned down the forthcoming Institute of Economic Affairs presidential debate but has, however, agreed to a one-on-one question-and-answer interview format. The decision has been met with a certain degree of fascination among political analysts and supporters ahead of the 2024 elections.

Indeed, the IEA debate forms part of the electoral calendar activities in Ghana, where candidates usually outline their policies and are expected to engage directly with their opponents. Mahama's absence does raise questions as to his campaign strategy, especially if he is trying to control the narrative by avoiding what could have been a potential confrontation with other candidates.

In a statement released through his campaign team, Mahama explained why he was holding tight to his position. "This approach allows for more meaningful dialogue with the electorate," the statement quoted Mahama as saying. "We believe that addressing the concerns of Ghanaians through direct engagement is more effective than a structured debate format.

And according to what political observers claim, "anticipates a change in strategy by candidates on how they will communicate with voters in times dominated by social media and other forms of digital interaction". He can always go back to a Q&A session to dwell on those specific issues and respond to citizens' queries without any interruptions, as is often the case with debates.

This is also amidst criticism that the format for the debate by the IEA is too combative and may not reflect the views of candidates. The Mahama camp, therefore, seems to bet that a controlled environment will avail him the opportunity to strike a chord with undecided voters.

As the campaign reaches its crescendo, this move by Mahama may set a trend for other aspirants in reaching out to the electorate. The former president is expected to announce at an appropriate time when his Q&A session will take place to afford an opportunity for free discussion and debate on important issues concerning the economy, education, and health of the nation.

As a key election is fast approaching, political analysts and voters equally will be monitoring the effectiveness of Mahama's approach.
