5G Launch: Ghana's Leap Towards a Connected Future and Economic Growth
In a historic move, Ghana has officially launched its 5G network, a transformative step President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo calls a “powerful catalyst” for the nation's progress. With this high-speed network, Ghana stands to benefit from enhanced connectivity that has the potential to support both economic growth and technological advancements. However, Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of vigilance in managing this technology, highlighting the need for data privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible use to maximize 5G’s positive impact.
The launch, held on November 1, 2024, in Accra, gathered key stakeholders and policy leaders. President Akufo-Addo underscored that while 5G holds significant promise, it requires a mindful approach to avoid risks that could threaten national security or privacy. “The journey ahead requires vigilance and responsibility. 5G is a powerful catalyst for shaping Ghana’s future,” he stated, urging a balanced approach to harnessing its benefits. He emphasized that Ghana’s youth, who make up a large portion of the population, stand to gain immensely from the new digital possibilities that 5G will bring.
Communications Minister Ursula Owusu also discussed the government’s strategy to safeguard data and ensure the security of users. Recognizing the importance of data privacy, the Ministry has implemented rigorous security measures aligned with international standards. “Data privacy and security are critical components of our digital strategy,” Owusu said, detailing protocols such as end-to-end encryption and advanced cybersecurity measures that are now part of the 5G rollout. Additionally, the government is working with cybersecurity experts to maintain constant monitoring and respond to any emerging threats promptly.
Inclusion is another core element of Ghana’s 5G strategy. The government has plans to extend 5G access to underserved rural areas by subsidizing infrastructure costs and implementing satellite technology. This approach ensures that Ghanaians in rural regions, often overlooked in technology expansions, will benefit from the same high-speed connectivity available in urban centers. "Our Universal Service Fund, managed by GIFEC, is now largely dedicated to rural connectivity projects," the Minister noted, illustrating the government's commitment to digital equity.
To make 5G more affordable and accessible, the government is collaborating with telecom providers on affordable data plans and exploring public-private partnerships to reduce consumer costs. Through these measures, Ghana aims to create an inclusive digital ecosystem, accessible to businesses, students, low-income households, and small enterprises. “Our goal is to create a digital ecosystem where high-speed connectivity is within reach for everyone,” Ursula Owusu stated.
The launch of 5G in Ghana marks a pivotal moment for the country’s digital future. By balancing progress with security and inclusivity, the government aims to ensure that 5G serves as a bridge to new opportunities, supporting a connected and prosperous Ghana.
