Former Man Utd Star Dwight Yorke Appointed Head Coach of Trinidad and Tobago
Dwight Yorke, the former Manchester United striker and Trinidad and Tobago legend, has been appointed as the head coach of Trinidad and Tobago's national team. This appointment, made just two days before Yorke's 53rd birthday, comes as the country prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With the tournament set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Yorke faces the challenge of guiding the "Soca Warriors" back to the World Cup stage.
Yorke’s enthusiasm for the role is unmistakable. "The opportunity to work with this talented, close-knit group of players is something I look forward to," he said in a statement released by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA). Reflecting on his past achievements, Yorke added, "Having helped Trinidad and Tobago to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000, captained the side at the 2006 World Cup, and served as assistant manager, my love and commitment to my national team is well documented."
Yorke has a deep connection to the national team, not only as a player but also as a leader. He captained the team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where Trinidad and Tobago made their historic debut. Although they did not progress beyond the group stage, their appearance in the tournament was a landmark moment for the nation.
His professional experience is vast, with notable playing stints in the English Premier League, including his time at Manchester United from 1998 to 2002. At United, he played a vital role in the 1999 treble-winning season and also had spells with Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Sunderland, and Blackburn Rovers. His coaching career includes a head coaching role with Australian club Macarthur FC, a position he held until January 2023.
TTFA president Kieron Edwards expressed confidence in Yorke’s ability to inspire both the players and the nation. "Dwight's experience, leadership, and commitment to the red, white, and black are exactly what we need," Edwards said. With Yorke at the helm, Trinidad and Tobago are hopeful for a return to the World Cup, backed by the skills and passion of one of their most celebrated football icons.
