Honoring a Legacy: Ghana Freedom Party Urged to Withdraw from 2024 Election in Tribute to Akua Donkor
On Peace FM’s radio program "Kokrokoo," Professor Smart Sarpong, a senior researcher at Kumasi Technical University, recently called on the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) to withdraw from the December 2024 presidential election. This suggestion comes following the passing of the party’s leader, Akua Donkor, and aims to honor her memory and legacy.
During his remarks on the show, Professor Sarpong emphasized that Akua Donkor’s journey was inspiring, particularly given her background. Without formal education, she rose against the odds to become a presidential aspirant, earning respect and admiration from many. According to Sarpong, her achievements symbolized resilience and determination, qualities that should be remembered with respect by the party and the nation as a whole.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has set a 10-day period for the GFP to select a new candidate if they wish to remain in the race. However, Professor Sarpong proposed that the party should instead abstain from this year’s election. He explained that such a gesture would be an appropriate way to honor Akua Donkor's memory. “In respect for the woman, pull your flags down,” he urged, suggesting that the party should declare its decision to bow out of the election as a tribute.
His advice has sparked some debate, with supporters and critics weighing the merits of continuing the party's political ambitions versus recognizing Donkor's legacy through an electoral pause. Some argue that fulfilling Donkor's dream by staying in the race would be the most fitting tribute, while others feel that stepping back would demonstrate profound respect and signal a pause to reflect on her life and contributions.
The Ghana Freedom Party, led by Akua Donkor until her passing, has been a unique presence in Ghanaian politics. Known for her outspoken and often unconventional style, Donkor became a national figure, championing the needs of everyday Ghanaians despite lacking traditional political or educational credentials. Her life story has often served as a reminder of how perseverance and commitment can propel individuals into influential roles, even in the face of significant obstacles.
As the December election approaches, the GFP faces a pivotal decision. The path it chooses will likely reflect its values and the degree to which it wishes to honor its late leader's legacy. Whatever the outcome, Akua Donkor’s legacy as a symbol of resilience and determination in Ghanaian politics will endure.
