CHAPTER ONE
SHATTERED
My phone buzzed, breaking the silence of the might. Amber’s name flashed on the screen. We hadn’t spoken for months, not since she and my best friend, Reese drifted apart. I hesitated, wondering what could prompt Amber to reach out after all this time. The text was concise, but its impact was a sledge hammer:
‘’Hey, I’m sorry to tell you this, but Babs is cheating on you with my best friend, Emily Hawkins. I’ve been waiting to tell you for ages, but I didn’t know how’’.
My mind reeled. Cheating?? With Emily?? Memories flooded back: late nights conversations, laughter and tears shared with Babs. How could she??
I felt numb, like I’d been punched in the gut. Questions swirled: Why didn’t I see it? The distance between us lately says it all. The excuses from time to time makes sense now.
Memories of Babs-belle as I fondly called her flooded my mind. I met her through Isaac Martins, her best friend who designed a funeral flyer for me. His thoughtful gesture during a difficult time led to the introduction of Babs and our connection was instant.
Amber’s text still stared at me, accusing. Cheating?? With Emily?? Unthinkable. My mind resisted, but memories began to resurface- small, seemingly insignificant moments that now hinted at deception.
I remember Babs laughter filled the room as I shared a silly story. Her smile lit up the space, captivating me.
Amber’s text still seared my mind: ‘’Babs is cheating on you with my best friend Emily Hawkins’’.
How could Babs betray me like this??
CHAPTER TWO
THE BREAK UP
I woke to the shrill ring of my phone, afternoon sunlight piercing my eyelids. Bab’s name flashed on the screen. ‘’Babs hey’’, I answered, grogginess clinging to my voice. Jordan, we’re done. ‘’Her tone was icy. My heart sank. ‘’What’s going on, Babs?’’. ‘’I know of Amber Pierce. ‘’Accusation laced her words. My stomach twisted. How did she find out? I hesitated, unsure of how to defend myself. ‘’Tell me it’s not true’’, she pleaded. I took a deep breath. ‘’It was a mistake, Babs. I was hurt when I found out about you and Emily’’.
Emily? ‘’Babs’ tone shifted from anger to caution. ‘’Don’t play dumb, Babs. I know what happened’’. ’’Is that why you proposed to Amber?’’ Her voice trembled. ‘’To get back at me?’’ I sighed, regret washing over me. ‘’Maybe. I don’t know. I wasn’t thinking’’. The line was silent. ‘’Babs?’’ ‘’ I deserve better than someone who would use another person to hurt me’’. Her voice was resolute. ‘’I understand. ‘’Defeat seeped into my bones. ‘’Goodbye Jordan. The call ended. I stared at the phone numb.
CHAPTER THREE
WINNING BABS BACK
Days blurred together, my world revolving around the ache of losing Babs. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d made a catastrophic mistake. I need to win her back I thought. I texted, called and showed up at her favorite spots, hoping to catch her off guard. Each attempt ended in disappointment. ‘’Babs, please listen-‘’
‘’I’ve made up my mind’’. Her texts were curt, unforgiving. I tried flowers, her favorite coffee, and heartfelt letters. Nothing worked.
I stood outside her apartment, hesitating. One last try. I knocked. The door opened and Babs stood before me, resolute. ‘’Jordan, I mean it. ‘’I’m done. ‘’Her eyes once bright with laughter, now seemed distant. ‘’Please Babs. Forgive me. I love you’’. My voice cracked. ‘’I love you too but you hurt me. ‘’Her voice trembled. ‘’You proposed to someone else to get back at me. That’s not love’’. I felt the weight of my mistakes. ‘’I know. I was wrong. But I promise-‘’
‘’No promise can fix this. ‘’she shook her head. ‘’Goodbye, Jordan. For real this time’’. The door closed, and I stood alone, defeated.

CHAPTER FOUR
UNEXPECTED CONNECTION
Defeated, I retreated from Bab’s apartment, my heart heavy. Her rejection stung, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d lost my chance. Days passed and I found myself thinking about Amber Pierce. Her smile, her laughter, and her kindness during our brief encounter had lingered in my mind.
I texted Amber asking to meet for coffee. She agreed and we settled on a quaint café. As I waited my nerves surprised me. What did I hope to find in Amber?? Amber arrived, radiant in a yellow sundress. We hugged, and I felt a spark of electricity. ‘’Hey, how are you?’’ she asked, concern etched on her face. ‘’Honestly?? Lost’’, I replied, taking a sip of coffee. Amber listened intently as I shared my struggles with Babs. Her empathy and understanding drew me in. ‘’I’m sorry you’re going through this’’, Amber said, her hand brushing mine. Our conversation flowed effortlessly, covering everything from favorite books to childhood memories. Two hours had passed, as the café emptied, Amber glanced at her watch. ‘’I’m so sorry, but I have to go’’. ‘’Already? I asked, disappointed. Amber smiled. ‘’Yeah. But let’s do this again soon?’’. I walked her out, feeling a sense of hope. ‘’Thanks for listening, Amber. You’re an amazing friend’’. My eyes locked onto Amber’s as I told her I would like us to be more than friends. Amber opened her eyes wide in shock. Jordan, I’m sorry but I don’t want to see anyone now. ‘’I understand, I said. But I want us to continue been friends.

One evening, over steaming coffee, Amber shared stories of her past relationships. ‘’I’ve been hurt before’’, she said, her voice vulnerable. ‘’But I’ve learned to prioritize myself’’. Her openness surprised me.‘’ ‘’You’re okay with being single?’’ I asked, intrigued. Amber nodded. ‘’I’ve come to realize my worth isn’t tied to someone else. ‘’I’m happy on my own’’. Her confidence and self-awareness impressed me. ‘’I admire that,’’ I said genuinely. ‘’You’re an incredible person, Amber’’. Amber’s smile warmed my heart. As we talked, I discovered her passion for touring and her dreams of travelling. With each shared secret, our connection deepened. I realized Amber’s beauty went far beyond physical attraction; it shone in her resilience, empathy and strength.
CHAPTER SIX
A TEXT OF TRUTH
My phone buzzed with Lynn’s text:
‘’Hey, how’s is it going with Amber?’’ I hesitated before responding: ‘’honestly, I’m still thinking about Babs’’. Lynn’s reply came in swiftly: ‘’Girl, move on! Babs made her choice. Amber’s into you. Don’t waste time on what –ifs ‘’. I sighed, knowing she was right. ‘’But it’s hard to let go,’’ I admitted. Lynn’s text was a gentle nudge: ‘’I know, but you deserve someone who chooses you back. Amber’s worth a real shot. Give her your heart’’. Her words struck home. ‘’You’re right,’’ I typed, resolve forming. Lynn responded in encouragement: ‘’Proud of you Jordan! Focus on Amber. She’s the fresh start you need’’. With new found determination, I silenced my Babs-related thoughts and turned my attention to Amber.

I stood outside Amber’s favorite coffee shop, ring box in hand, heart racing. This moment would change everything. ‘’Hey,’’ Amber said, smiling as she joined me. ‘’Hey,’’ I replied, taking her hand. ‘’From the moment I met you, I knew you were special. Your kindness, your laugh, your beauty….I want to make you mine,’’. Amber’s eyes sparkled. I opened the ring box, revealing the shimmering diamond. ‘’Amber Pierce, will you be my girlfriend?’’ I asked, my voice trembling. Amber’s face lit up. ‘’yes! Yes, ‘’I’ll be your girlfriend!’’ she exclaimed. I slid the ring onto her finger, sealing our commitment. Two years flew by in a whirlwind of love and laughter. Amber and I grew inseparable. ‘’Baby, its time,’’ Amber said, her eyes sparkling. ‘’My parents want to meet you,’’. My heart skipped a beat. ‘’California, here we come? I asked. Amber nodded. ‘’ They’re excited to meet you,’’, she said. ‘’And I’m nervous,’’ I pulled her close. ‘’We’ve got this love,’’ I reassured. We booked our flights, and Amber’s anxiety grew. ‘’What if they don’t like you?’’ she asked. I smiled. ‘’They’ll love me,’’ I teased. ‘’How could they not?’’ Amber playfully rolled her eyes. As we soared to California, Amber’s stories about her family flooded my mind. ‘’Remember my mom is a bit quirky’’, Amber said. ‘’And your dad’s a jokester,’’ I recalled. Amber grinned. ‘’You’ll fit right in’’. Upon arrival, Amber’s parents welcomed us warmly. ‘’Finally!’’ Karen exclaimed, embracing me. ‘’We’ve heard so much about you,’’ Mark shook my hand firmly. ‘’Good to meet you, son,’’. We searched everywhere for you!’’. As they shared memories I glimpsed Amber’s carefree childhood. Amber’s expression turned nostalgic. ‘’Summer vacations at the beach,’’ she said. ‘’We’d spend weekends there, just playing and laughing.’’ Her eyes shimmered. ‘’Those were the best times.’’ I wrapped my arms around her. ‘’I’m glad you have such happy memories,’’ I said. We shared our visions for parenthood. ‘’But I want to do something different,’’ I said. ‘’What’s that?’’ Amber asked. ‘’Let’s adopt,’’ I suggested. ‘’Give two deserving kids a loving home.’’ Amber’s face lit up. ‘’oh baby, that’s amazing!’’ she said, tears welling I her eyes. We hugged, our hearts overflowing. ’’We’ll give them the best life,’’ Amber whispered. We researched adoption processes and visited orphanages. At one home, we met two brothers, Emmett and Alex. I meticulously planned the perfect proposal. Amber deserved a fairytale. I chose a serene lakefront spot, where sunset hues danced across the water. Amber and I strolled hand-in-hand, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. ‘’Close your eyes,’’ I whispered, leading her to the spot. Amber’s eyes sparkled with anticipation. As she opened them she gasped. Before her stood a beautiful, flower-adorned gazebo. Candles flickered softly. ‘’Amber,’’ I begun, my voice trembling with emotion. ‘’You light up my world.
