Akufo-Addo Encourages Prempeh College Alumni to Support NAPO as Ghana’s Next Vice President
At the 75th anniversary celebration of Prempeh College, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo encouraged current and former students of the school to support Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, in the upcoming elections. Akufo-Addo appealed to Prempeh College alumni to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is running for President, with NAPO as his vice-presidential candidate. If elected, NAPO would become the first former Prempeh College student to hold the office of Vice President, an honor that President Akufo-Addo emphasized would bring great pride to the institution and its community.
Addressing the students, Akufo-Addo highlighted the accomplishments of Prempeh College alumni in Ghana's political landscape, mentioning that former President John Agyekum Kufuor, also an alumnus, served the nation in a distinguished manner. He expressed his hope that, with support from the Prempeh College community, Dr. Opoku Prempeh could follow in these footsteps and contribute meaningfully to the country's leadership.
Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Opoku Prempeh's work ethic and commitment to public service. Known for his dedication and achievements, NAPO has served as the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and has held prominent positions in the government, including Minister of Education and Minister of Energy. His reputation as a “workaholic” and effective politician, according to the President, makes him an ideal partner for Dr. Bawumia in addressing critical national issues, such as infrastructure and educational reform.
During his speech, Akufo-Addo acknowledged that the school's leadership had discussed various infrastructural needs with him and voiced confidence that NAPO, alongside Bawumia, would prioritize these issues if elected. He urged Prempeh College students, fondly known as "Amanfoo," to consider the symbolic value of electing one of their own to a high office and how this could inspire future generations of students.
This endorsement reflects the broader strategy of the NPP to garner support from key communities by emphasizing connections to their candidates. By drawing on the shared history and pride of Prempeh College alumni, Akufo-Addo sought to mobilize a sense of unity and purpose, encouraging them to actively participate in shaping the country's future.
As the December elections approach, the NPP continues to promote its candidates as leaders who will bring practical solutions and development to Ghana, hoping that support from institutions like Prempeh College will strengthen their base.
