Liverpool climbed to the top of the Premier League table with a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over Brighton at Anfield, highlighted by a sensational goal from Mohamed Salah. Despite a difficult first half, where Liverpool struggled to match Brighton’s energy and precision, the Reds managed to turn the game around and secure three points.
Brighton took the lead just 14 minutes in, thanks to Ferdi Kadioglu's precise right-footed shot, which beat Liverpool's stand-in goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and went in off the post. Kadioglu’s strike rewarded Brighton’s early dominance, as they repeatedly broke through Liverpool’s defense, testing Kelleher and threatening to extend their lead. Jack Hinshelwood's exceptional pass to Georginio Rutter set up another promising chance, but Kelleher held strong, and Brighton ultimately failed to capitalize on several close opportunities.
The first half saw Liverpool’s attack stifled, with few clear chances. Darwin Nunez managed a solo run from inside his own half, but his effort was saved by Brighton’s goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen. Liverpool’s defensive concerns worsened when Ibrahima Konate was forced off at halftime due to injury, replaced by Joe Gomez.
In the second half, Liverpool emerged with a renewed sense of purpose. Arne Slot’s halftime adjustments clearly took effect, as Liverpool applied immediate pressure on Brighton’s defense. Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk both came close to equalizing, and the momentum began to shift in Liverpool’s favor. After an hour, Cody Gakpo’s intended cross ended up curling into the far corner of the net, leveling the score and igniting the Anfield crowd.
With Liverpool surging forward, Salah delivered the game-winning moment just minutes later. Curtis Jones launched a swift counter-attack and found Salah, who expertly cut inside on his left foot and unleashed a stunning shot into the top corner, giving Verbruggen no chance. The goal marked Salah’s return to form and further solidified his status as Liverpool’s key playmaker.
Brighton fought hard in the closing minutes, pressing for an equalizer and causing some nervy moments for the Liverpool defense. However, the Reds held firm, managing to stave off the visitors’ late attacks to secure the victory.
Liverpool’s win was made even sweeter by the setbacks suffered by their main title rivals, Manchester City and Arsenal, who both dropped points elsewhere. City suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, while Arsenal was edged out by Newcastle. This allowed Liverpool to move two points clear at the top, signaling their intent to challenge for the title this season.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool has been revitalized, with 13 wins in 15 games, and their resilience was on full display in this match. The team’s performance in the second half showed their depth, determination, and the ability to turn a game around under pressure, with Salah’s brilliance proving decisive once again.
