Yoane Wissa Returns to DR Congo Squad for Afcon Qualifiers

Brentford striker Yoane Wissa has made a significant return to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) national team ahead of their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers. The inclusion of Wissa is one of only three changes made by coach Sébastien Desabre to the squad, as they prepare for their final series of qualifiers for the 2025 Afcon in Morocco next year.

The Leopards, having already secured their place in the finals after a series of impressive performances, will face Guinea in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on November 16, followed by a home match against Ethiopia in Kinshasa three days later. Wissa's absence during the last round of qualifiers, where DR Congo achieved two consecutive victories against Tanzania, was felt, and his return is expected to bolster the attacking options for the team.

In addition to Wissa, the squad sees the return of 19-year-old Ngal'ayel Mukau from French club Lille, who was initially called up in August but withdrew due to injury. This time, he has the chance to earn his first cap and make a name for himself on the international stage. Another notable selection is Irish-born Peter Kioso, who is included in the squad for the first time after stepping in as a late replacement for injured defender Axel Tuanzebe last month.

DR Congo has been in excellent form during the qualifiers, boasting a perfect record after four matches, having scored six goals while not conceding any. Their current standing, with a six-point lead over second-placed Guinea, positions them as strong favorites to win Group H. This impressive performance reflects the depth of talent in the squad and the effectiveness of Desabre's tactics.

The complete squad showcases a blend of experience and youth, featuring players from various European leagues. Notable defenders like Chancel Mbemba from Olympique de Marseille and Arthur Masuaku from Besiktas strengthen the backline, while midfield talents such as Gael Kakuta and Silas Katompa Mvumpa provide creativity and dynamism. Upfront, Wissa's partnership with forwards like Fiston Mayele and Simon Banza will be critical in maintaining their winning streak as they look to solidify their dominance in the group.

As the team gears up for these important matches, the return of Wissa adds both skill and experience to the squad, enhancing their chances of further success as they aim to make a significant impact in the upcoming Afcon tournament. The excitement builds as fans look forward to witnessing the Leopards continue their impressive run and showcase their talent on a continental level.
